The Coin Look - Counterfeit Detection - 1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln Cent

The 1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln Cent is a possibly the most counterfeited coin out there.

It it most often counterfeited by adding adding the "S" mintmark to a 1909-Plain V.D.B Lincoln Cent.

There are four mintmark positions for this coin. All the mintmarks are the same shape with the same die chip as pointed out below.

One other thing to look at is the V.D.B. on the reverse. Although somewhat minor, there are some differences in the shapes of the letters.

Notice the bottom of the D in the top picture comes to a bit more of a point. Also, the crossbar of the B in the top picture is more slanted than the bottom.

The top image is that of an authentic 1909-S V.D.B, while the bottom photo is that of a 1909-Plain V.D.B.
